"A LIFE LIVED IN FEAR IS A LIFE HALF LIVED".
BAZ LUHRMANN

AND YES...IF YOU'RE NOT AFRAID, YOU'RE NOT LIVING...

IT'S A STRONG PHRASE, A BIT DISCONCERTING AND IT GETS THE IDEA ACROSS, BECAUSE WE ALL FEEL SOME SORT OF FEAR, GREATER OR LESSER, WHEN FACING A TRANSFORMATION: IT'S PART OF THE GAME OF LIFE.

"Fear is the most difficult emotion to manage. Pain is cried out, anger is shouted, but fear silently clings to the heart."
Gregory David Roberts

What is fear?

Fear is a primary emotion, a fundamental affective experience common to both humans and animals. It has a very important adaptive function: it protects us in the face of danger or threat, whether real or imaginary. It is a natural reaction that is triggered when we perceive danger.

What can cause fear?

The causes of fear can be many and vary from person to person. Some fears may be innate, linked to the survival instinct, while others may be learned through direct or indirect experiences.

In general, fear can be triggered by:

  • Real and immediate dangers: such as a wild animal, a fire, an accident.
  • Potential or imaginary dangers: worries about the future, fear of failure, fear of others' judgment.
  • Specific objects or situations: animals, heights, closed spaces, darkness, etc.
  • Past traumatic events: which can leave a lasting emotional mark.

Some types of fears:

There are many types of fears, some very common and others rarer. We can distinguish them into different categories:

  • Common fears:
    • Fear of the dark (nyctophobia)
    • Fear of heights (acrophobia)
    • Fear of closed spaces (claustrophobia)
    • Fear of spiders (arachnophobia)
    • Fear of snakes (ophidiophobia)
    • Fear of public speaking (glossophobia)
  • Social fears:
    • Fear of others' judgment
    • Fear of being rejected
    • Fear of social interactions (social phobia)
  • Fears related to natural events:
    • Fear of thunderstorms (astraphobia or brontophobia)
    • Fear of water (hydrophobia)
  • Fears related to health:
    • Fear of getting sick (nosophobia)
    • Fear of doctors (iatrophobia)
    • Fear of needles (trypanophobia)
  •  There is a very large number of specific phobias, some of which may seem unusual, such as the fear of long words (hippopotomonstrosesquipedaliophobia) or the fear of the color yellow (xanthophobia).

Any difficulty, suffering, pain, the failure to achieve a goal, a relationship that doesn't work always contains an element of fear that we can use as a deterrent to remain still or as a push to go beyond.

“Today is the tomorrow you were so afraid of!”
Jim Morrison

Every human being has within themselves the power to choose and decide which direction to take

Yet when the tools are lacking, making this choice can seem difficult and even impossible. This is why many remain in difficulty and hope that sooner or later someone or something can improve their life.

Psychological support and/or Psychotherapy have the function of helping you recognize the obstacles you have placed between yourself and happiness, providing you with refined tools to put yourself in a position to overcome them.

It starts from the premise that every person possesses all the resources necessary to achieve their own happiness and reach the goals they desire. You just need to find a way to bring out your talents and learn to use them to add awareness to your life, expand your confidence and self-esteem, increasing the creativity needed to face any type of problem.

Anxiety is a complex emotional state characterized by a feeling of apprehension, nervousness, worry, or fear, often in the absence of a real or imminent threat. It manifests both mentally and physically and can range from mild uneasiness to a sense of paralyzing terror.

Key aspects of anxiety:

  • Emotional component: Feelings of fear, worry, tension, irritability, feeling "on edge".

  • Cognitive component: Difficulty concentrating, recurring negative thoughts, rumination, feeling of "empty mind", expectation of negative events.

  • Physical component: Palpitations, tachycardia, sweating, tremors, muscle tension, headache, gastrointestinal disorders (nausea, stomach ache), breathing difficulties, feeling faint, insomnia.

  • Behavioral component: Restlessness, agitation, avoidance of feared situations, easily startled.

"Normal" anxiety vs. "Pathological" anxiety:

It is important to distinguish between the anxiety that everyone occasionally feels in stressful situations (exams, job interviews, important decisions) and the anxiety that becomes excessive, persistent, and significantly interferes with daily life. The latter may indicate an anxiety disorder, which requires attention and, if necessary, professional treatment.

Causes of anxiety:

The precise causes of anxiety disorders are not completely known, but they are believed to be the result of a complex interaction of factors:

  • Biological: Genetic predisposition, neurochemical imbalances in the brain.

  • Environmental: Stressful or traumatic events (bereavement, abuse, accidents), relational difficulties, work-related stress.

  • Psychological: Personality traits (e.g., high reactivity to stress), negative thought patterns, dysfunctional defense mechanisms.

Types of anxiety disorders:

There are several types of anxiety disorders, including:

  • Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD): Excessive and persistent worry about a variety of events or activities.

  • Panic Disorder: Sudden and intense attacks of fear or discomfort accompanied by physical symptoms.

  • Specific Phobias: Intense and irrational fear of specific objects or situations (e.g., heights, animals, enclosed spaces).

  • Social Phobia (Social Anxiety Disorder): Intense fear of social situations in which one might be judged or humiliated.

  • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD): Characterized by intrusive and recurring thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive behaviors (compulsions) aimed at reducing anxiety.

  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD): Develops after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event.

If you think you are suffering from anxiety that is affecting your life, it is advisable to talk to a mental health professional. There are effective treatments to manage anxiety and improve the quality of your life.
